Irish Aid
Alder class went on trip to Irish Aid. It took a long time to get there. Caoimhe helped us learn about the big changes in the upcoming years. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals : this is a global goal. Then we met Michael. He knew a lot about Tanzania and taught us about it. Kimberly already knew some. Then we did drumming which was really fun. Finally we went to St. Stephen’s Green park and fed some ducks. They fought over the bread. Then we played in the playground and we went back to the bus. We had a very fun and active school tour.

On Friday 15th of June, our school had an open day for our permanent building.
The Taoiseach was there and was watching all of our performances and thought 5th&6th class were the best performance. Some of 5th&6th class were MCs (Masters of Ceremony) and it was a really tiring job for Ankit, Klay, Milena and Sumukh. Lots of honorable people came because our school was opening such as : Leo Varadkar,Mary Mc Camley, Paul Rowe, etc. Everyone loved the Open Day because at the end all the classes got to eat sweets and the best part was children got interviewed for RTE. At the end of the day everyone thought it was great fun. Hidden valley report
On June 7th the Alder class and the Beech class went to Hidden Valley. In Hidden Valley our first activity was kayaking around the lake with a paddle. Also in hidden valley we got to do rock climbing and other courses in Hidden Valley. We also got to go in water balls and it was really fun. My conclusion is that hidden valley is a really nice place to kayak and do other activities. WORMERY
A wormery helps the earth. Because of the compost it makes juice for flowers and vegetables to grow quicker. A wormery is a thing you build. First you will need some wood, nails, hammer, and chicken wire. If you are younger than 9 years old you will need an adult to help you build a wormery. We made 4 layers, out of wood. If you want to add a fancy roof you can. We put it outside. We ripped up paper, we put it at the bottom layer. We added some rotten food but not onions or lemons. We opened the bag of worms and put them on the layer with soil. Remember to do these two steps on Monday and Friday every week: Put some water and rotten food on the bottom layer, so that the worms don’t die. Intercultural May
Last month was Intercultural May, Alder Class was learning about Slovenia because we got in touch with a Slovenian school and our whole school is learning about other countries too. We got in touch with a Slovenian school and learnt from there, we went on a website called Twin Space where we did a project on Ireland and the Slovenian school did a project on Slovenia. We took their information on Slovenia and they took our information on Ireland and we went into groups and made a project on Slovenia. For our projects we had different topics like Music, Art , Food and more . We even made a timeline on Slovenian History, we could make videos, posters, cookbook and a dictionary. Slovenia sent us a song called “Bartita po morju plava” and we sent an Irish song called “Molly Malone” and sang it in assembly and sent in a video of is singing the song and they sent us a video of them singing “Molly Malone”. We put our projects on the display board for everyone to see. We saw everyone else projects and they were great. We also wore clothes from our country. So that is what we did for Intercultural May , my highlight is when we learnt “Bartita po morju plava” and it was an amazing time. -Ananya Half Marathon Alder and Beech class ran a Half Marathon from 26/4/2018 to 14/6/2018. A Half Marathon is 21,000 meters or 21 kilometers. We ran around the yards starting at the bike shed. It was done to improve our physical fitness. It was ran in stages of 220m - 660m over the time space of two months. We started in late April and finished early in June. Unless it was raining, we ran every day as soon as the 8:30am bell rang. Alder class are 5th class, while Beech class are 6th. We had a strict routine to stick to, and we did stick to it. It involved warm-ups, getting into pairs, running one lap at a pre-defined pace and two to four on our own at whichever speed best suited us. On the final day, we were on 20,952 meters or 20.952 kilometers. We ran once around at our usual defined pace, once more on our own, and, on the last lap, we ran down the side of the school and through the finish line (made of two bamboo sticks, and masking tape). The top three were Luke, Nathan and Erik. They got medals with their achievement on it. The rest of us got participation medals. All of us got something out of it. It was challenging because we got exhausted and because 21 kilometers is a lot for 5th and 6th class children. In conclusion, we enjoyed it as an outdoor activity though it was exhausting. We were all up for the challenge as it was a healthy way to start the day. Running a half marathon is a great achievement and we have the madals to prove it! A little Man’s tutorial of how to run 21km.

In powerstown E.T.N.S we have a gaa team.We started gaa in April and five weeks ago we played a match against Ladyswell. The juniors played the Gaelscoil. The first match was Powerstown senior girls vs Ladyswell senior girls. The game was really good to watch because we were chanting even though Powerstown lost i’d say they had fun. Then, it was Powerstown juniors vs Gaelscoil juniors. Powerstown lost but it was only a friendly game it was not a competitive game. The next match was Powerstown senior boys vs Ladyswell senior boys. The match started. Ladyswell scored a goal then they scored two more goals. Then Nathan scored a goal and my friend Eric scored a point and a goal. We lost but it was so fun. After the game we had to walk back to school. We were so tired. It was a long day and i was exhausted and when we got back to school we got to keep our gum shields so if i want to use my gum shields outside with my friends i can. Gaa is one of the best afterschool clubs in Powerstown E.T.N.S In conclusion we all had a great time at the blitz and in GAA training. GAA is a good and fun game for kids and adults. Powerstown E.T.N.S is a good school for running the GAA after school club. By Nathan and Oje Felt art(CraftED)
In May and April a girl called Gabbie came in and taught us how to Felt. At first everyone was confused and everyone had loads of questions. After all the questions Gabbie showed us how to Felt. First we started of with a simple felt ball. Then we done a self portrait of ourselves!(Obviously made out of felt). Secondly after all the weeks Gabbie said we were ready to make a huge felt art piece….Our class suggested a lot of ideas! We also did democracy so that it would be fair and no one would be sad or mad. So I am going to tell you what we needed for the big felt piece. We used a lot of cotton, lots of water and only one bar of soap! It took a long time since we had to throw it and it made a lot of noise! The weird part of that session was that no one heard the noise. But after all those shenanigans, we had to roll it 80 or 60 times (whatever the number was it was a lot!) Then we had to throw it about 20 times and it was very exhausting! After all that work we had to let it dry. It took about three or two weeks to dry. But at the end it was all worth it since in the Open Day the Taoiseach saw it and the mayor (well the old one) ‘Mary Byrne’ At the end it was very rewarding since it was tough but fun. Dear Parents,
This week and next week I will be teaching the children about Stay Safe topics on Touches and Secrets. This is a difficult but very important conversation to begin: by talking with our children about child abuse in an age appropriate level, we can help reduce the chance of it ever happening to our children. I will be sending home discussion points for homework this evening and again next week. If you need more information about the Stay Safe program, it's available to the public at http://www.staysafe.ie/teachers/5+6%20class.pdf With Eid fast approaching we have opened our celebration space in the Kamilah Room. If you would like to help decorate this space to be used as part of our Official Opening celebration, please pop along to the school anytime before Friday. We have a few decorations but please bring along anything you think might add to the space. Thanks!
